Frequenty Asked Questions

This page provides answers to frequently asked questions about mail.it. Please contact the Online Support if you do not find the answer to your question here.

After purchase am I allowed to use your example files and modify them according to my needs?

Yes, you can modify the example files to your needs or use them as basis for your own solution.

I downloaded the trial version and it stops working after one hour. How can I use it for a longer period?

The trial version is limited to 1 hour use per FileMaker session. If you would like to use mail.it after that you need to restart FileMaker. Please register your copy of mail.it by purchasing an appropriate license as you start using it on a regular basis.

What is the meaning of POP3 and SMTP?

POP3 (Post Office Protocol, version 3) is the standard used to receive emails. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the standard used to send emails. mail.it works with those (most popular) email protocols POP3 and SMTP.

'Relaying Denied' - what does it mean?

Relaying not allowed or denied indicates that your SMTP server has spam protection enabled. That means you are trying to send with a 'From' email address that your SMTP server does not 'know'. Your senders email address has to be one that the mail server has in its database.

How should I setup mail.it in a network environment?

Please consider the following points when planning an email solution with mail.it in a multi-user environment:
1) Are clients going to send and receive email by themselves or will a centralized FileMaker host do that job for all users?
2) Access privileges have to be assigned on record level to ensure that every user can only browser his or her inbox or the inbox of a certain user group.
3) As long as attachments should be accessible from every user machine, they are to be stored on a network volume. Therefore, this volume should be mapped as the same drive on all clients so that all users can work with the same attachment file paths (save and open).

Certain messages from certain senders do not get parsed properly. What can I do about it?

mail.it works according to the international RFC Standard (email standard).
Some bulk email clients unfortunately do not comply with this standard. Please send such an email (header + body) to support@dacons.net and we will try to make mail.it compatible with such mails for the next update.

'Exceeding maximum number of users' message - what does it mean?

It means that you are using more instances of mail.it in your network than your license allows. You can either close/disable mail.it versions in your network or upgrade to a larger license. You can upgrade to a license that allows for more users in your network by paying the difference between the current price of the license you already have and the one you would like to purchase. Contact us for further details. If you think this answer does not apply to your particular situation consider this: The plug-in is registered in the network when registration functions from the plug-in are called. The plug-in is unregistered from the network when user stops working with it (exits FileMaker or disables the plug-in from preference dialog). If FileMaker crashes (or system crashes or power failure etc) the copy of the plug-in may still be registered in the network. You need to exit all (also those that did not crash) copies of FileMaker which uses plug-ins in the network. Then start them again.

How many emails can mail.it send out in a mass mailing scenario?

We know clients who do regular mailings to their customers base of 10,000 plus. However there is no logical limit on how many mailings mail.it can send out. The performance of mail.it depends on the CPU and memory of the computer that runs FileMaker, the connection speed to the mail server and the performance of the mail server hardware and software.

mail.it and Proxies - how does it work?

mail.it can work with POP3 proxies, which work as a forwarders. In this case you simply set POP3/SMTP servers in mail.it to your proxy server.

Does mail.it work with FileMaker 4.x?

Yes, it does with the exception of the download timer under Windows. If you would like to look at the example files and only have access to FileMaker 4.x we suggest you download the free trial version of the latest FileMaker version at: http://www.filemaker.com
